Participatory
Culture: Vincent Miller argued an idea in his book Understanding Digital
Culture, where he shows how the
border lines between producer and consumers become blurry. Producers are those
who create content and consumers are those who consume those contents.
Participatory culture refer to that blurry line because participatory culture
creates the blurriness. In participatory culture everyone can create and
consume contents at the same time. Everyone is a contributor. The idea of
producers and consumers no longer exits.
The emergence of internet trigger the participatory
culture. In addition, when the participatory cultures get bigger the resource
of internet gets bigger. An example of participatory culture is YouTube, where
everyone can produce and consume content. In participatory culture,
participation is the main important thing.
The participatory culture opens new path for
earning. For example, in YouTube when someone watches a video the creator of
the video earns money and the people who watches video can also create video
and earn. As a result, the resources become more available for everyone. The
price of information gets cheaper.
Everything comes with good and bad, so the
participatory culture. Everyone can create content so myths and fake information
can create easily. For example, someday ago in Bangladesh a fake information
of salt price got viral on Facebook. That created a mess in civic society. Therefore,
everyone got power in participatory culture and anyone can misuse that power.
Cyber bulling is another negative side of participatory culture. People can
create content to harass other.
